Chapter 5 Leading from any chair.

Each and every person plays an important role and can contribute with its own talents and abilities in any kind of group or organization. Human beings need to be recognized through their acts, ideas, and creations. Nowadays it is important to promote an inclusive and collaborative leading culture, which in my point of view could create a sense of community and unity and could also be an important element that leads to success. It is really important that in that kind of culture everyone learns how to share and collaborate with respect to others work.

Chapter 6 Remember Rule number 6.

The recognition and assumption of our own mistakes needs to become part of our daily practice as an example of humility. Leaders need to show they are also human beings and can make mistakes as anyone else. The work of leaders is hard because they need to show humility, be inclusive but at the same time they need their team to have awareness that they are still the leaders.  Unfortunately the line between leadership and control, and leadership and partnership can disappear in an instant. Sometimes people can confuse leadership as authoritarianism and partnership as anarchy. I think it is huge work and an enormous responsibility to be a leader. That is why it is important to train people on how to lead and know a balanced way to manage leadership. I personally think that a good leader uses words that give others encouragement about their future, empowerment to feel creative and refreshment to visualize things from a positive perspective and attitude.

Control, stereotypes, prejudices, and judgments close channels of communication and don’t allow free interaction. Nowadays everything seems to be controlled and I personally think that people need freedom to act. Freedom and responsibility have to go hand on hand. People need that freedom to feel fulfilled and be able to see the universe of possibilities they have in the world of action.

Sometimes we put those stereotypes in people because we are victims of our own fears. We need to go beyond ourselves and give people the opportunity to be free (I talk about freedom with responsibility) to act and that it will enrich the connection between you and your team. So you can be able to have a collaborative environment.

Chapter 7 The way things are

When a change is presented we tend to resist at it. We spend time looking for culprits, complaining on how much we dislike the situation or denying it but what it is needed is to move ahead. We need to overcome and face the situations presented to us with a positive and realistic attitude.

We need to face our fears and neutralize our emotions so once we have done that we will begin to see things how they are. There is phrase in Spanish that says “don’t make decisions with a hot head because they will never generate good results”, it is necessary to cool down and then with a cool head make the pertinent decisions to move on.

Chapter 8 Things that matter to you.

Human beings need to transcend. Transcendence is something that comes in humans’ nature.  We cannot let our busy life style to put our passions to sleep. We need our passion as a driver of our actions. Doing things with passion will serve as an example to others and can inspire and awake their own passions. So in this way we can contribute and form a chain of inspiration and collaboration.

  1. Luz, this first sentence struck a chord because I work with a few teachers who feel it is their duty to humiliate middle schoolers. While I agree that it is to our benefit to be humbled every so often in order to remain grounded and effective leaders, I think we must be careful when correcting a child. Can’t you imagine a world when a lesson in humility didn’t bore a hole into our souls? This is the mark of a true leader. One who can take criticism and learn from it.

  2. wonderful reflection and observations on the reading. I loved the last bit about the need for humans (us) to live in transcendence. So true and so powerful, especially for those of us who are the role models for the next generation.
